Despite all of us going through life getting our haircut every few weeks, many people don’t know how to tell a barber what kind of hair cut they would like. Especially if you’ve ever had to switch barbers due to moving to a new area, it’s often hard to figure out what to say to your new barber! As a barber, I have clients that I’ve cut for my entire career, and when they sit in my chair I simply ask them “just the usual today?”!
So, what can clients and barbers do to help each other communicate about the service? Pictures. Bring pictures in. We always appreciate a client that is well prepared with a couple of pictures. They don’t have to be you in the pictures, especially with the power of Google these days. Simply pick a few pictures of the sides and top that you like, and often times that’s enough info to begin the service.
Now hold on a minute, it is slightly more complex than this. Everybody has unique hair density, color, growth patterns, cow licks, etc. Even two guys with exact same hair density but with different hair colors, the same length on both heads may look very, very different. This is where your barbers expertise comes in, and they should be able to tell you where to make adjustments to get pretty darn close to what you want. They should also be telling you if what you want is realistic for you. Another thing to consider is how much effort and maintenance do you want to put into your hair? However that’s a topic for another post.
